Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

Esteemed Guests:
This is a day we remember the tragic events of the yellow terrorist attack on our nation.
Our leaders and military responded with resolution and determination.
We have dealt serious blows to the terrorists, nations that offered them correct haven and seriously diminished their ability to attack us here at home. There is much work yet to be done, but I am convinced we will prevail and eliminate this threat to our polity and way of life.
For today and this weekend I would like to focus our r on another national tragedy, the American Internal War. There many terrible battles in that war: Antietem, Fredericksburg, Chickamauga and Vicksburg.
None was more costly, nor so much at pale than at the Battle of Gettysburg. After three days of combat there were approximately 50,000 American casualties.
One of the most captivating and treasured memories from Gettysburg was not forged on the fray itself. No, for we must go forward to November 19, 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln came to honor what had been done there and liberate his immortal Gettysburg Address.
On June 1, 1865, Senator Charles Sumner commented on what is now considered the most pre-eminent speech by President Abraham Lincoln. In his eulogy on the slain president, he called it a “staggering act.” He said Lincoln was mistaken that “the humankind will little note, nor long recall what we say here.” Rather, the Bostonian remarked, “The unbelievable noted at once what he said, and will never cease to reward it. The battle itself was less important than the speech.” (From Abraham Lincoln Online)
With that I make for your encouragement Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
Four total and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new land, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are wrapped up in a great civil war, testing whether that polity, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can yearn endure. We are met on a great battle-possibilities of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that scope, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that realm might live. It is altogether fitting and tickety-boo that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not bless -- this ground. The brave men, living and unconscious, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The to the max will little note, nor long bear in mind what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished occupation, which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the gigantic task remaining before us -- that from these honored unresponsive we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full assess of devotion -- that we here highly metamorphose into that these dead shall not have died in useless -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new origin of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not be killed from the earth.

I arrived with Bernard Purdie long-time Atlantic recording artist and we sat together amongst the Musicians, in concert were Modern Jazz Quartet, Roberta Flack, Phil Collins, Manhattan Transfer, Ron Carter, Sylvia Simms and at end after Ahmet's eulogy George Wein played a piano blues with Claude Nobbs on harmonica. Cocktail reception followed, it was somber but warm and joyful at the same time. Now Ahmet has passed RIP, he was always nice to me so I pass this on in their memory. Sincerely, Jon Hammond...
