Introduction:
Mazda 323F/Lantis were launched in 1994. It came with 4 bodystyles (see photos below). Fill someone in 1: Mazda 323F Neo, Mazda Lantis Hardtop (back and front observation), Mazda Lantis GT Hatchback AND Mazda 323F Protégé.
In this review, I’m focusing on the 323F Lantis 5 door. In Malaysia, the Lantis 5 door came OFFICIALLY with either 1.6 Directions, Auto or 1.8 Auto. Back in December 1995 it were priced from 86,000 (for 1.6M), 90,000 for 1.6(A) AND a whooping RM100,679.06 for the ABS Equipped Lantis 1.8GT.

“DIFFERENT YET Hostile
It wasn’t long ago that the Mazda 323 Astina held a wilful niche in the market because of its racy and choice styling. The “pop-up” headlights gave the Astina a unrivalled touch that was generally not found in ordinary cars and as a rule associated with sport models.
When the Astina made way for the new Mazda 323 Lantis 5 door earlier this year, its successor was hand with the unenviable position of taking over where the Astina had Nautical port off. We decided to find out if the new Mazda Lantis 1.8GT has the redeeming qualities to join its predecessor.
The testcar loaned was a 4 boost Automatic model and holds the flagship stature of the range. It earns its top class simulacrum with a price just under or just above RM100,000, depending on the league colour. The cheaper option, the 1.6 5-door which comes with a 5 sprint manual gearbox goes for under RM89000 on the way.
At certain angles, the new Mazda Lantis 5-door appears to have some of the Astina in its substance styling. The tapering curve of the bonnet that flows gracefully up to the roof before out-and-out gently down to the notchback rear reveals some Astina Connections. There is less of a rounded presence but a little more angular edges to cut some high-powered thrust into its sporty contour.
Experienced supporting items include the well sculpted front airdam with husky central vents for engine cooling, a spoiler on the study deck that blends superbly with the Lantis’ aerodynamically efficacious lines and visually pleasing 5-spoke moderate wheels to bring out the macho position of the car.
In the place of the pop-up headlights are the more conventional epitome which are rather slim horizontal units that add to its breakaway sense of values from the ordinary. The current styling affluent by most Japanese carmakers has larger headlights (dual if accomplishable).
Put together, the Mazda designers have shown that you don’t deprivation to have exclusive features to capture the wit of car buyers. Well crafted lines are a discriminating blend of well-chosen supporting features will do an equally fair job of getting the adrenalin racing, hardly imbibe the visuals!
The striking part about the Lantis 5-door is that it is not as bulbous looking or as wieldy as its Ford Cousin, the hatchback. There is a slimmer and more svelte look as if the car has gone through a boom course at the slimming session. It’s that fashionable looking.
The reason why the Lantis 5-door is so strange from its Ford cousin is because there is an understanding between them that one variant of the spread would be different. For this generation of Mazda 323 and Ford Laser, the replica that is chosen to separate them distinctly is the 5-door variation. Previously, it was the Ford TX3 which had no equivalent in the Mazda 323 distribute.
INDIVIDUAL AIR:
The air of difference is also noted backing bowels the Lantis in some of the design adopted for key areas like the door alignment, dashboard styling and instrument panel.
We were a no surprised to see a completely different paper panel. It was not the same as that in the Lantis 1.6L sedan we tested some months earlier which featured the proletarian facia adopted in the entire sort of Ford Laser Lynx.
The one in the Lantis 1.8GT has a less polished design but it’s still simple and effective. Each meter (there are four of them) features a raised circumferential silhouette, perhaps to add a touch of “Olde” sportiness.
The layout features the two big dials (for tachometer redlined at 7000rpm and speedometer) and to the vindicate are two smaller dials, one on the top of another (see picture below), to to as fuel level and coolant temperature. On the noteworthy right is the gear shift putting indicator and a series of warning lights, including that for the archetype Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
With a strange dashboard comes a different cowling and conflicting air vent design that curves with the fascia. The layout of air-trickle control, buttons for the rear demist and a endangerment light, and the air-conditioning control are thus all unheard-of. The only similarity is the dummy buttons bunched up on each side of the steering column.
LOT’S OF Lapse, BUT…
At the bottom, there’s no retractable cupholder facility and there’s principally an absence of practical coin trays. The dominant control has a lidded compartment between the seats that doubled as an armrest. This is good for bigger items like handphones or a almighty dollar but NOT coins.
Elsewhere, there is a small compartment honest below the instrument panel that opens downwards. This is tolerably deep box that seems best suited for a unite of sunglasses rather than coins. We used it once but the coins rattled all over as the car went over bumps and winding roads.
On the traveller side, the double glovebox feature was the only in keeping feature. The upper compartment is in fact meant for an airbag for the front passenger in models that have this thing as standard. Otherwise, it’s turned into a second storage array with a top opening lid.
As for the other area of storing small paraphemalia, there are no door pockets of the kidney that we have come to expect in the Mazda Lantis and Ford Lynx. Here too, the Mazda Designers seem to have tried something disparate.
