Not solid if it’s the same in most suburbs, or cities, but there seems to be so many more hoons at edge of night – we’re always hearing revving and tyre squealing around our quarter. And has been 6-10 people killed lately with idiots who are barely speeding, or drifting.
Part of the problem these days (IMHO) is that cars are good too powerful – unnecessarily so. Without saying “back in my day” – I grew up with an old Ford Escort, and a lady had a Holden Gemini. We couldn’t do burnouts even if we tried ! And could no more than get to 100 km/h.
Nowadays, the car of choice for P-platers is a V8 Holden or Ford – or Subaru WRX. Even a paradigm Holden V6 has LOTS of power – and undoubtedly dangerous in young hands.
Of conduct, not all teens and P-platers are death-defying hoonsters, and I’m purposes sounding like an old fuddy-duddy – but it right-minded seems sensible to help those folk who recollect they are “invincible”.
The title of this duty is about “Big Father” - as opposed to Big Mate. There are now some ways to monitor the driving habits of teenagers – not so much “monitoring” but somehow “limiting”.
The facetiousmater (“Big Father”) can limit the stereo supply, and speed limits – as well as insure seat belts, etc.
Ford’s new MyKey system allows parents to limit despatch and audio volume, improve protection-belt usage and provide inopportune low-fuel warnings on the cars their teens drove.
Safety controls for parents of teen cars
This might not be acclaimed with teens – but it could be a case of “you wanna sponge the car, these are the rules !”.
I was thinking more about how they can limit to “80 mph” – that’s still about 130 km/h – what about the “acceleration” – for distract racing, etc – or doing “70 mph” in back streets, or waste roads ?
I have another thought/answer - I recollect seeing an episode of Top Gear, in which there was a day-dream BMW (M5) that had some dashboard controls to set how much power the motor could put out – this was for normal, sport & tribe mode – each setting had MORE power.
And Honda advertise that there is a V6 motor that can run itself on 3 cylinders to save fuel.
But – there’s no rationality you couldn’t combine these ideas – and have the same factor for setting a “reduced” power standard operating procedure for teens/P-platers.
We have a V6 Commodore – and the failure power is about 175 KW – the same as a hot HSV from about 10 years ago – as pattern !
It’s still a few years until our lads are old enough to drive - 15+ years in the score – but it current engine trends at, then the standard Commodore will have 300 KW of power – and in all likelihood MORE !
I’m sure our family wagon (Commodore) would still be driveable and OK with peradventure 100 kW – just have the machine run on 4 cylinders – not 6.
You could simply key in a practices on the dashboard, maybe using the buttons on the stereo – and would run at 1/2 power.
This would ill-tempered less drag racing, less speeding in back streets, and (quite) less people killed or injured.
The technology exists, for sustain-saving, can we use it to be “life” qualifying ?
