Harley Davidson -unmatched star in motorcycles

In 1901, William S. Harley, age 21, drew up plans for a mini engine with a displacement of 7.07 cubic inches (116 cc) and four-inch (102 mm) flywheels. The apparatus was designed for use in a regular pedal-bicycle put up.
Over the next two years Harley and his boyhood compeer Arthur Davidson labored on their motor-bicycle using the northside motor shop at the home of their friend, Henry Melk. It was finished in 1903 with the cure of Arthur’s brother, Walter Davidson. Upon realization the boys found their power-cycle unqualified to conquer Milwaukee’s demure hills without pedal assistance. Will Harley and the Davidsons fast wrote off their first motor-bicycle as a valuable information experiment.[11]
Work immediately began on a new and improved promote-generation machine. This first “tangible” Harley-Davidson motorcycle had a bigger locomotive of 24.74 cubic inches (405 cc) with 9-3/4 inch flywheels weighing 28 pounds. The contraption’s advanced loop-mount pattern was similar to the 1903 Milwaukee Merkel motorcycle (designed by Joseph Merkel, later of Flying Merkel renown.) The bigger engine and loop-setting design took it out of the motorized-bicycle list and would help define what a modern motorcycle should curb in the years to come. The boys also received purloin with their bigger engine from outboard motor set Ole Evinrude, who was then building gas engines of his own make-up for automotive use on Milwaukee’s Lake Thoroughfare.
The prototype of the new loop-frame Harley-Davidson was assembled in a 10- by 15-foot (3 by 5 meter) booth in the Davidson family backyard. Most of the principal parts, however, were made elsewhere, including some probably fabricated at the West Milwaukee railshops where oldest sibling William A. Davidson was then toolroom floor-walker. This prototype machine was functional by 8 September 1904 when it competed in a Milwaukee motorcycle watercourse held at State Fair Leave. It was ridden by Edward Hildebrand and placed fourth. This is the first documented looks of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the recorded record.[12]
In January 1905, miniature advertisements were placed in the “Automobile and Round Trade Journal” that offered divulge Harley-Davidson engines to the do-it-yourself m. By April, complete motorcycles were in assembly on a very limited basis. That year the first Harley-Davidson merchandiser, Carl H. Lang of Chicago, sold three bikes from the dozen or so built in the Davidson backyard shine. (Some years later the original ooze was taken to the Juneau Avenue mill where it would stand for many decades as a tribute to the Motor Fellowship’s humble origins. Unfortunately, the first penthouse was accidentally destroyed by contractors in the initially 1970s during a clean-up of the factory yard.)
In 1906, Harley and the Davidsons built their first works on Chestnut Street (later Juneau Avenue). This site remains the Motor Company’s corporate headquarters today. The first Juneau Avenue vegetable was a 40 by 60-foot (18 m) free-story wooden structure. That year around 50 motorcycles were produced.

In 1907, William S. Harley graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a position in mechanical engineering. That year additional works expansion came with a second astonish and later with facings and additions of Milwaukee unusual yellow (”cream”) slab. With the new facilities production increased to 150 motorcycles in 1907. The suite was officially incorporated that September. They also began selling their motorcycles to monitor departments around this time, a market that has been noted to them ever since.[13]
Production in 1905 and 1906 were all apart-cylinder models with 26.84 cubic inch (440 cc) engines. In February 1907 a referent model with a 45-degree V-Matched engine was displayed at the Chicago Automobile Show. Although shown and advertised, very few V-Pair models were built between 1907 and 1910. These first V-Twins displaced 53.68 cubic inches (880 cc) and produced about 7 horsepower (5 kW). This gave about spit the power of the first singles. Top speed was about 60 mph (97 km/h). Product jumped from 450 motorcycles in 1908 to 1,149 machines in 1909.[14]
By 1911 some 150 makes of motorcycles had already been built in the Like-minded States — although just a troublemaker would survive the 1910s.
In 1911, an improved V-Double model was introduced. The new engine had mechanically operated intake valves, as opposed to the “spontaneous” intake valves inured to on earlier V-Twins that opened by mechanism vacuum. With a displacement of 49.48 cubic inches (810 cc), the 1911 V-Twin was smaller than earlier twins, but gave recovered performance. After 1913 the majority of bikes produced by Harley-Davidson would be V-Link models.
By 1913, the yellow stone factory had been demolished and on the site a new 5-chronicle structure of reinforced concrete and red block had been built. Begun in 1910, the red chunk factory with its many additions would take up two blocks along Juneau Avenue and around the corner on 38th Boulevard. Despite the competition, Harley-Davidson was already pulling up ahead of Indian and would dominate motorcycle racing after 1914. Opus that year swelled to 16,284 machines.

Elated War IIn 1917, the United States entered Cosmos War I and the military demanded motorcycles for the war achievement. Harleys had already been used by the military in dado skirmishes with Pancho Villa but Set War I was the first time the motorcycle had been adopted for oppose service. Harley-Davidson provided over 20,000 machines to the military forces during Superb War I.
The 1920sBy 1920, Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle maker in the world. Their motorcycles were sold by dealers in 67 countries. Making was 28,189 machines.
In 1921, a Harley-Davidson, ridden by Otto Walker, was the first motorcycle ever to win a speed at an average speed of over 100 mph (160 km/h).[15][16]
During the 1920s, several improvements were put in house, such as a new 74 cubic inch (1200cc) V-Ringer, introduced in 1922, and the “Teardrop” gas tank in 1925. A front down was added in 1928.
In the late summer of 1929, Harley-Davidson introduced its 45 cubic inch flathead V-Look-alike to compete with the Indian 101 Scout and the Excelsior Wonderful X.[17]
The DepressionHarley-Davidson WL
The Egregious Depression began a few months after the introduction of their 45 cubic inch archetype. Harley-Davidson’s sales plummeted from 21,000 in 1929 to less than 4,000 in 1933. In with the aim to survive, the company manufactured industrial powerplants based on their motorcycle engines. They also designed and built a three-wheeled conveyance vehicle called the Servi-Car, which remained in in until 1973.[17]
In the mid-’30s, Alfred Rich Lad opened a production line in Japan with the 74ci VL, which became Rikuo after the begetter company severed its business relations with Harley-Davidson.[18]
An 80 cubic inch flathead apparatus was added to the line in 1935, by which perpetually the single cylinder motorcycles had been discontinued.[19]
By 1937, all the flathead engines were equipped with the dry-sump oil recirculation system that had been introduced with the 61E and 61EL “Knucklehead” OHV models. This caused the 74 cubic inch V and VL models to be renamed U and UL, the 80 cubic inch VH and VLH to be renamed UL and ULH, and the 45 cubic inch RL to be renamed WL.[20]
In 1941, the 74 cubic inch “Knucklehead” was introduced as the F and the FL, replacing the 80 cubic inch flathead UH and ULH models.[20]

One of only two American cycle manufacturers to subsist the Great Depression, Harley-Davidson again produced fat numbers of motorcycles for the US Army in Crowd War II and resumed civilian production afterwards, producing a cook-stove of large V-twin motorcycles that were in the money both on racetracks and for private buyers.
Harley-Davidson, on the eve Exceptional War II, was already supplying the Army with a military-peculiar version of its 45″ WL line, called the WLA. (The A in this occasion stood for “Army”.) Upon the outbreak of war, the suite, along with other manufacturing enterprises, shifted to war m. Over 90,000 military motorcycles, mostly WLAs and WLCs (the Canadian adaptation) would be produced, many to be provided to allies.[21]
